Sea Gypsy Boat Floating
Festival : This is a rare and unique tradition
of the sea gypsies. It is organized every 15th day
of the waxing moon of the 6th and 11th lunar months
annually at Ko Lanta. The sea gypsy group called "Urak
- lawoi" on this island and neighboring islands
would get together to perform this rite of getting
rid of bad luck. The rite is performed on the beach
front near Sala Dan Village. Part of the ritual is
singing and dancing on the Rong Haeng rhythm around
the boar. The rite would go on for 3 days, and the
villages would make their boats of Salacca Palm called
"Plahchak" for floating into the sea. Hair,
nails of the third day, the boats would be floated
to try one's fortune. If the boat floats out to sea
without any obstacle, it is believed that the person's
life would be better since all bad luck has gone with
the boat, but if the boat returns to the bank it is
considered as a bad omen. Therefore, an effort is
made to pull the boats free away from the bank.
Krabi-Andaman Fair
: This fair is organized annually in November
as an opening to the tourism season for the province.
It features enjoyable activities, cultural performances
and various kinds of water sports competition.
Pun Thao Gong Birthday
Fair : Pun Thao Gong is the name of a deity remaining
in a shrine in Krabi city Residents of Chinese origin
jointly organize the birthday anniversary commemoration
for him in January annually. The fair is organized
at Chao Fa Pier in front of Krabi Town. Besides inviting
the God to take over the body of a medium, other deities
are also invited t the occasions. The deities in mediums
would perform various miracles. The long and well-decorated
processions would passes along the roads and old markets
area. All devotees would eat only vegetarian food
throughout the fair for purifying their body and the
inner mind.
